The sad end of the red dream in Brazil

In the beginning the principles were quite different. For over 25 years, I personally  followed  the trajectory of the Workers' Party that has grown and strengthened on  top of the Metalworkers  Union's trucks parked  in front of the factories of the ABC region (First letters of the cities Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo and  São Caetano, in São Paulo). As a journalist and PR in the automotive industry,  I  carefully listened to the eloquent leader of the workers while he stirred the crowds with his strong speeches to avoid layoffs, strugling fiercely in favor of wage increases for the "working class" . Thousands of workers  were very often persuaded to leave their workplaces to immediately stop production of the plants and go to strike, often closing roads to draw media and public attention to their claims. This was done with geat  success in those years. The speeches of Luis Ignácio Lula da Silva, president of the Metalworkers Union on those times, holding  the mike in one hand and gesticulating with another  on top of  the trucks used to impact  the whole country, thanks to his call for union and march to a better life for all Brazilian people. For years, those commom struggles and emotional speeches helped give to the region the most prosperous wage levels in Brazil. It was during those meetings ("assembleias") that the greatest  dream of the workers was sowed. The dream was to some day see their most respected and adored representative in charge of the Government in Brasilia in order to continue to "fight" for the quality of life of the working class. The good dream was having an economy with sustainable growth, increasing employment levels and better wages. Success over inflation.  Above all, the dream was about having honest politicians more concerned with a better life for honest workers. When the Workers' Party finally came to power, the country was experiencing  an economic growth from the previous Government. So that was the scenario  during  the first years of  the Workers' Party administration of the country. But unfortunally, the dream was still a long way to come tue. We know, however, that all absolute power corrupts absolutey. And that's exactly what happened to the leaders of the Worker's Party. Once mounted in power, supported and applauded by millions of Brazilians workers, things were no longer as in the beginning.  Competence in public administration was not at all a basic criterion. Corruption was institutionalized. An unbridled pursuit for self benefits turned a commom practice in the management of public assets. The dear "comrades" no longer reffered to  the working class anymore. It started to represent  only the closer colleagues who also made their minds to get the most out of the situation. The worker's dream was forgotten in the past. The power corrupted completely the creators of the  beautiful dream. Backed by a reputable history of "fights" and victories  on the top of  the trucks, the Party considered legal every illegal procedure from the powerful chair in Brasilia. Everything could be justified in the eyes of the new powerful politicians. And instead of making the workers' dream com true, reality brought a nightmare. Millions of people, including thousands and thousands of metalworkers, who believed, and still believe, in the good speeches of their greatest leader, continue losing their jobs. No more fiery speeches at meetings on top of the trucks can change the situation. The capital which always paid wages received a mortal blow. The country lost millions and millions of dollars in investments and the economy stopped growing. Large, medium and small businesses closed their doors or are limping. The salaries of those who continue working are shrinking with the crisis and inflation. Consumers lost confidence and stopped buying. But in this whole scenario the Brazilian democracy has matured and gave a blow to corruption and incompetent government. Most part of the population welcomed the recent impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff. The former President Lula is now accused of accpeting bribes and money laundering when he was the dream in Brasilia. Most Brazilians do not accept anymore to give up their future just because of a beautiful past of a specific political party. After all, the past also passes away. The good Party unfortunately consolidated in power as a bad Party. It  definitely entered to the  history of Brazil as a real example that good principles, good intentions and good speeches to crowds are definetely not enough. Not even a wonderful story of "fights" in favor of the workers is enough. It is absolutely necessary, above all things, to provide a good and worthy present time to also conquer a great future. Unfortunately, the Worker's Party abandoned the last two things. And the red dream of the Workers' Party cast on the top of the trucks in those "assembleias" unfortunately was despised and cast down. The dream is over.
